Project Charltons
Promoting Health and Wellbeing in an Environmentally Friendly Way
Project Charlton’s is made up of a group of five women who got together in January 2019 after the children’s playground area had been closed throughout the summer of 2018. Their mission was to provide an outdoor activity area that would meet the needs of every member of the Community from the age of 0 – 100yrs including any with a disability or Special Need! A pleasant and attractive outdoor space is so important for our health, physical & mental well being
Over the three years we have been working together, we have raised £94,000.00 toward the target of £150,000.00. This magnificent sum could not have been achieved without the generosity and kindness of local people who made donations, hosted events or simply supported the functions. We have also been very fortunate to receive funds from;
In March 2021 the first phase of the children’s play was completed. The second phase includes a wide slide, scramble net, steps and rope pull-up which will go on the prepared mound once it is settled. Very soon, after a much anticipated wait, a zip-wire will also be installed. A Sensory Seating Area is work in progress. We have many local, enthusiastic volunteers ready to help plant a rich variety of plants and shrubs. Villagers have also shown great generosity and donated plants for this new area. Some of the seating to go in here will be provided by local residents who have purchased them as memorials for their loved ones. There is a plan to provide a special space for the young people of the village where the original play area was. Some ideas for this are a basketball hoop, a football kick board and a shelter where they can sit together and “chill”. We are working with the young people to discuss what they would like to have included. Finally, it is planned to provide a fitness trail where adults can come at their own convenience and tone their muscles, improve their strength and work on their mobility! It is difficult to provide a time line as provision is so dependent on funds. Of course we did not foresee a global pandemic that would hinder our fundraising events for a year but we are continuing to host events within the community and very much hope as many of you will support these, enjoy them and help us achieve our aim of providing an exciting outdoor activity area that meets the needs for all of us!
